BMA Collective Action

Posted on:

Dear Patients,

We want to inform you that General Practitioners (GPs) across England have voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking collective action to address ongoing issues in the healthcare system. This decision comes after more than 8,500 GPs participated in a ballot, with 98.3% supporting the action.

Key Points:

  • Purpose of Action: The action aims to improve the conditions under which GPs operate and to highlight the need for better support and funding from the government. This will help us provide better care for you.
  • Actions Taken: Practices may choose from a list of ten possible actions, such as:
    • Refusing to share patient data unless it’s in the best interest of the patient.
    • Referring patients directly to specialists, bypassing longer NHS processes.
    • Turning off certain NHS software that aims to cut prescribing costs.
  • Impact on Patients: We assure you that these actions are designed to minimize any disruption to your care. In fact, many of these measures will allow GPs to spend more time with their patients.
  • Reason for Action: GPs have been working under increasing pressure with insufficient funding. Despite repeated warnings, the government has not provided the necessary support. General practices receive only 6% of the total NHS budget, which the BMA’s GPC England Committee believes should increase gradually.
  • Commitment to Care: We are committed to keeping our doors open and continuing to provide the best possible care. These actions are taken to ensure the sustainability of our services and to advocate for the resources needed to maintain high standards of patient care.

Reassurance:

Please rest assured that while GPs are taking these steps to address systemic issues, our priority remains your health and well-being. We are taking these actions carefully to ensure that your care remains uninterrupted and that we can continue to serve you effectively.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,
Lepton & Kirkheaton Surgeries
